China Faces Covid-19-like Surge: Some Basic Facts about HMPV and Other Viruses Overloading Hospitals and Crematoriums

China is experiencing a rise in respiratory diseases in this season, including human metapneumovirus (HMPV) as seen in newspapers. From posts on social media, and other reports, there are claims of increased cases of the virus with evidently over-stretched hospitals and crematoriums. Footage published on social media shows hospitals filled to the brim, users noted that several viruses are now simultaneously spreading, including influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Covid-19.

There are unconfirmed rumors of a state of emergency in China as well. Heath authorities are observing the spread of HMPV that is causing flu-like, and Covid-19 like symptoms.

A post from the X handle “SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19)”: Many viruses, including Influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and the Covid-19, have raised pressure on hospitals and crematoriums in China. It has noted that children’s hospitals are under pressure from an increase in pneumonia and ‘white lung’ diseases.

China’s disease control authority has recently began a pilot program of monitoring for pneumonia of an unidentified etiology. A preliminary plan for managing unknown pathogens emerged this week following revelations by authorities that respiratory diseases are expected to surge during the winter season, a development Reuters covered.
